The indie surf-rock band The Moss brought a wave of energy to Pittsburgh on April 27th at Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall, just days after releasing their third album Big Blue Moon (April 24). Originally from Hawaii and now based in Utah, their breezy, surf-inspired sound translated effortlessly to the stage.
Opening the night, Good Boy Daisy set the tone with high energy and strong crowd interaction, especially before “Selfish,” where they pulled the audience into the moment. Their song “Supermodel” stood out to me as a highlight of their set.
The Moss began with a creative intro featuring fun facts about moss, then moved into “Chaparral,” setting the tone for the night. Songs like “Big Blue Moon,” “I Like It,” “Your Way,” and “Canyon” from their newly released album, kept the vibes strong, with the crowd swaying and dancing throughout. “Dog Valley,” played right before the encore and delivered a burst of upbeat, high-energy rock that brought the room to its peak.
In a surprising twist, The Moss started their encore with a slower, acoustic two-man performance of “Galleria”, an intimate and unexpected contrast to the usual high-energy finish, but still ended with a bang. Overall, it was a creative, vibrant show that proved the band is only gaining momentum.
