On Wednesday, October 14, I was able to chat with The Fresh Bears and catch their set at The Government Center here in Pittsburgh. From the start, it was clear that these guys have a lot of love for music and what they do. Their set was full of energy, light, and just the right amount of chaos.

Taking us back to their roots, the band covered the song “Good Love” which is quite different than their sound today. Starting as a brotherly blues jam band, their musical journey brought us to their alt rock sound their band brings us today. The brotherly connection is still alive on stage with Hudson (vocals/guitar), Jude (lead guitar), and Everett Felsman (drums). They play alongside bassist Grant Baker, with Carl Brannbacka joining them playing guitar and keys, and tagging in on vocals with Jude and Hudson.

They powered through their set with the kind of energy you don’t want to miss. They played many tracks from their recently released sophomore album, VERY AMERICAN. They included some of my personal favorites, “ANOTHER DAY” and “UGLY”. They also brought us another classic, covering the Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.” The way they all connect on stage is very contagious. Before you know it, you’re moving around with them.

Beyond being incredibly talented, the guys are welcoming, kind, and hilarious. Each bringing their own personality to the stage and off. Getting some down time with the band was a refreshing change, giving us a chance to talk about life on the road and what challenges come with it. Losing your voice is not ideal when touring, but these guys worked together, pushed through, and gave the crowd the same energy and passion you’d hope for any other night.

If this Chicago rock band is coming to your city, then clear your calendar! The Fresh Bears bring energy, chaos, and the kind of show you will not want to miss!
